Designing for a circular economy
Merchant Land welcomes the Mayor of London’s office publishing ‘Design for a circular economy’ document to help property developers and architects to design for a circular economy, with ideas such as rental furnishing and the use of block chain technology.
A circular economy is one where materials are retained in use at their highest value as long as possible and are then re-used or recycled, leaving a minimum of residual waste. The successful implementation of circular economy principles will help to reduce the volume of waste that London produces and has to manage.
The London Waste and Recycling Board (LWARB) estimate that moving to a circular economy could add between £3bn and £5bn in value to the built environment sector by 2036. It could also create as many as 12,000 jobs over the same period whilst reducing waste and other environmental impacts.
Merchant Land have made an internal commitment to test the above policy on future projects. To read the full document published by the Mayor of London’s office, please click here.
