Merchant Land welcomes the opportunity to respond to the City of London’s consultation on the City Plan 2036.
The plan outlines the approach for the future development of the City of London. It sets out what type of development the City Corporation expects to take place and where. It also sets out the City Corporation’s vision, strategy and objectives, together with policies that guide decisions on planning applications.
In responding, we welcomed the overarching vision and strategic aims of how the City can contribute to a flourishing society, support a thriving economy, and shape outstanding environments.
We commented on a number of topics covered by the Plan including Healthy and Inclusive City, Offices, Retailing, and Key Area of Change, amongst others.
Underpinning our approach was the recognition of the essential role that Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) play in the City’s success and the need to supply high quality office accommodation, with floorspace that is flexible and adaptable, to meet the demands of different types of business occupiers. Essential here too, and as noted in the Plan, is the need for office space to be complemented by other commercial, cultural and leisure uses adding vibrancy and animation to the City’s streets.
